Amazing Grace Instrumental (Full version)

No need for a history lesson for this great song. My wife Gaye is playing backup on the Baritone Ukulele.

John Brown’s March Instrumental (Sample)

We have not been able to find the author and date of this tune. John Brown made his name known in Kansas four years before his raid on Harper's Ferry. Following his death in 1859, many songs were written about John Brown and his efforts to destroy slavery.

Sandy Boys Instrumental (Sample)

History is  somewhat obscure for this tune. An Old Time Breakdown and song from Kentucky or West Virginia played in the Mixolydian mode of “A”. The earliest known version appeared in an 1844 minstrel songbook reproduced by Harvard Theatre College Collection, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Wildwood Flower Instrumental (Sample)

This American song is best known through performances and recording by The Carter Family. The original title was written in 1860 by Maud Irving with music by Joseph Webster.

Keel Row Instrumental (Sample)

Known as the “Tyneside National Anthem”, called and claimed as a Scottish tune but disputed as Northern English in origin. The tune was a popular song along the Tyne River before 1700.

Soldiers Joy Instrumental (Sample)

One of, if not the most popular fiddle tunes in history, widely disseminated in North America and Europe in nearly every tradition. Bayard (1981) dates it to "at least" the latter part of the 18th century, citing a version that has become standard in Aird's 1778 collection. Kate Van Winkler Keller (1992) says that the hornpipe “Soldier’s Joy” appeared with a song in London in about 1760.

South Callaway Waltz (Sample)

A beautiful piece but no history.

East Virginia Blues

We first heard this song while browsing through the Digital Library or Appalachia website. This version, performed by Dulcimer player Ray Hicks, is a rousing, foot stomping rendition of this traditional Appalachian tune. Our second encounter with this song was on the Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour performed by Michael Johnathon. His masterful version and tempo is how we came to record this song.
